Warner Brothers Harry Potter tour

by on June 25, 2012

From Alex:

Today we went to the behind the scenes Harry Potter tour. To get to the studio, we took the London Overground to Watford Junction and took a bus to the studio. The buildings for the exhibit were labeled as studios “J” and”K”. What a coincidence! This tour contained the real props for the Harry Potter movies. Did you know that 17 1/2 Ford Anglia flying cars were made for the films? Even the real Diagon Alley was in the tour. Fun Facts: no Diagon Alley was the same for 2 movies, and it took 100 designs for dragons before the director was satisfied with one.

Here I am in the actual set of the Great Dining Hall.

From David:

The thing that was most amazing to Renee and I about the tour, is the insane amount of effort that went into these films.  Every scene went through 4 or 5 phases, including concept drawings, paintings, paper models, props and costumes, then shooting.  They built a 60 by 60-foot, 20-foot high, totally-detailed model of Hogwart’s, simply for using in exterior scenes.     They spent months building a fully-functional mechanical beast,  only to decide the motions weren’t quite right so they used computer graphics instead.  They spent 16 weeks building a totally-accurate scale model of the Weasley’s house, just to burn it down. (Do you think maybe they could have stopped after 14 weeks and called “good enough”?)

Here we are at the set for the Dursley’s house:

And continuing the theme of “everything tastes better with chocolate”, Anna is amused by Kit Kat Yogurt:

Sorry, Anna, we are NOT going to buy it.

Candy of the day? Wow – is that going to last the entire 10 weeks? Couldn’t chocolate breakfast cereal substitute for the candy of the day occasionally? Sounds like the tour was fun. Why are you all wearing long sleeves? P.S. Ben loved his magic trick (opened it today).
