Greenwich
Today’s trip was to Greenwich, home of the Prime Meridian and the reference point for the world’s time zones.
Here’s the obligatory photo at the meridian: Anna, Alex and Renee are citizens of the world but apparently David is just a western hemisphere kind of guy.
Anyone notice that this is the first photo of David in England without a sweatshirt?
We learned lots of fascinating info about clocks and the role of accurate timekeeping in the development of the British Empire: turns out that you can navigate north/south by watching the sun and moon, but they don’t help you know where you are in east/west direction unless you know what time it is. The 16th century equivalent of our X-Prize was a prize for developing the first super-accurate clock for ships.
Here are Anna and Alex at a very famous sundial. Sundials of course are worthless in England in the summer.
For all of Anna’s friends, here she is in front of a Pie store. (For the rest of you, that’s an inside joke… just let it slide).
So the which was green? Why didn’t we see any sign of the which? Give Anna chocolate yougurt. Give Anna chocolate yougurt. Give Anna chocolate yougurt. Give Anna chocolate yougurt.
“Must have chocolate yogurt! Give chocolate yogurt to me! Give chocolate yogurt to me! . . .” Anna says
Alex, I can’t believe how great your writing is – and how amazing your trip has been! You are inspiring us to follow your footsteps with our own kids! Thanks for all your stellar reporting – we love it!
Anna loves PIE… Have some more chocolate.
