If one had but …

by on June 27, 2013

If one had but a single glance to give the world, one should gaze on Istanbul.

– Alphonse de Lamartine

Note from Renee:  above is a quote that Alex liked, about Istanbul.  My favorite thing today was the marble in the Hagia Sofia.  By taking a block of marble and then slicing it and flipping the pieces over they were able to make repeating patterns of slabs.  Since we’ve seen tons of mosaic and painted churches, the innovative use of this natural patterns was very interesting.  The cake shop was as good as Alex mentioned – so good in fact we will go back “everyday”  – or at least once more before we leave town.

Note from David:  Re “gazing on Istanbul”    We’ve only experienced one small part of this (huge) metropolis, but it’s a pretty intense place.  I took a long walk today while Anna napped and got a bit of a feel for it.   The people are very friendly and it feels very safe, but boy, there are many many people, and they’re all selling you stuff ALL THE TIME.   I guess a city that’s been the crossroads of the world for 8,000 years, and is the melting pot between Europe, Asia and the Middle East, will pick up a certain personality.  And heck, the  Bazaar had already been selling stuff for 50 years, when  Columbus came to America!
