Today we took a tour of some of the mansions. We started by going to The Breakers. The Breakers is the first mansion in the area, and one of the largest.

We took the audio tour, that took us all around the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floors. The other floors are for the servants. In the main hall, there was a grand staircase, that had a lower height difference between the steps than normal stairs, so that women wouldn’t trip over their dresses. There also were very interesting designs in each room. Some of these designs include gold and platinum. Yes, platinum, the most valuable metal on earth. The second floor had all of the bedrooms. All of the bedrooms had an intercom system, which was very modern for the time. The rooms were very large, and each of the bedrooms had a private bathroom. The bath tubs were made out of marble, so hot water had to be flushed through it twice, before anybody could go in it. Also, the sheets would be changed twice a day, and clothes would be changed up to 7 times. After finishing the audio tour, we went to have lunch at the Tennis Hall of Fame. People were playing tennis, so we had good views.

We then went to another mansion, called The Elm. The Selfie of the day

We took what was known as the “Servants Tour”. We looked at all of the areas that were for the servants only. The fourth floor had the housing, which was quite spacious even by todays standards. Skylights in the floors let light flood below. We also got to stand on the roof, and look at the bay. After that, we went to the basement. There was a washing room, ice room, boiler room, pastry room, and storage room. The boiler room had its own train track to carry coal. The train went from a nearby street. The chefs got payed a lot more (about $1,000 more then the head butler [at that time]). We eventually finished the tour, and got ice cream. We realized that as the weather got better, the ice cream got worse. Basically, the ice cream was not the best so far. We got back to the hotel, and are now going to bed. This is an overview of what we did today.
