Honkey Kong (Alex)

by on July 12, 2016

Today, we went to Hong Kong. I have seen some very interesting things here. First, a lot of the signs are in Chinese (I am not sure which version) and English. This is because the British controlled Hong Kong for a long time. Due to the English and Chinese control, Hong Kong has become a weird mixture of both. Many of the street names are very English, like “Salisbury”. There are the very Chinese huge LED ads on buildings along the water, but there are double decker buses. Also, they drive on the left side of the road.

I don’t know why this paper says “Alex”

Hong Kong has a weird divide between the waterfront and the places further away from the water. There is lots of booming business along the water, but very little business in an area with apartment buildings from the 1950s that almost seems like a scene from a horror film only a few blocks back. I find it unusual that the atmosphere changes so dramatically super quickly.  I guess the apartment buildings will be torn down and replaced by skyscrapers soon.

The rush hour traffic is INSANE… And it’s amazing how many people drive very expensive cars in this traffic.  I guess they get to spend a lot of time “enjoying” their cars.

There is a boat that Mom rode a lot when she lived in Hong Kong in 1985 called the Star Ferry. We rode on the Star Ferry, and it has not changed very much, if at all, since when Mom lived here.

We ended the day by watching a light show performed by lights on the buildings across the harbor.  The light show was cool, but not as impressive as I had expected.

The world’s 10th tallest building has a light show on the side that had some really cool electronic patterns on it, though.

It also showed the URL to download their app, 118 stories high…. That must be the world’s largest app ad.

Sorry that this post is super short, it is 10:00 P.M. and I am extremely tired.

Alex – I agree with you on the light show. I heard about it last year when we were there and I trekked all the way down to the water to watch one night and didn’t end up even staying for the whole thing. I guess I’m too used to Vegas extravaganzas!
