Hello Stockholm (by Renee)

by on July 6, 2017

Today we flew from Bergen to Stockholm…our second visit to Sweden on this trip!  Nice easy flight, short (only 1 hour …. much better than the option of 14 hour drive through Norway’s mountain) and we arrived to find our super nice apartment right in the heart of Gamla Stan, the oldest part of the city. In fact our apartment building was built on top of the medieval wall of the city.

Here is Anna standing in front of the house next door…which was the most famous “pleasure house” in Stockholm in the 1700’s.

Rumor is that a great treasure was buried in the catacombs under the houses on our street…and the deed to the house mentions that if the treasure is ever found, it has to be shared with all previous owners!

Right across the street is the old German Church with its very pretty tower.

Tonight we did a “Ghost Walking Tour” which told historical stories with a morbid spin.  It was only so-so (much silliness from the guide) but we did get some history including the origin of the term “blood bath” which was the mean Danish King Christian II rounding up 100 troublemaking noblemen in Stockholm. 83 were executed in a 7 hour timeframe before a big storm blew in which brought some flooding. Interesting that the square where this all happened is very popular (and just down the block from our apartment) and is where Stockholm holds their famous Christmas Market every December.

Here the guide is showing Alex how they cut off the heads!

There is so much to do here in Stockholm so we will have three full days…our plans include the ABBA Museum, the VASA and of course visiting the worlds largest IKEA store!
